Microchipping to Help Protect Your Pet!
How will your pet be identified if he ever strays from home and gets lost? Collars and tags can easily become displaced when a dog is on the move, therefore it’s important to take steps to ensure important owner contact information can be found if your dog or other pet becomes lost. If the lost animals are found and owners cannot be reached, these precious pets eventually end up in animal shelters. Unfortunately, only a small percentage of the animals reported lost are ever reunited with their owners.
Microchipping is one way to ensure your pet can be identified when he is found. Microchips are the size of a grain of rice. They are implanted by a veterinarian in a simple procedure that does not require anesthesia. Microchip costs vary by practice, but most average around $50. Microchips aren’t just for dogs- cats, horses, and most other mammals can be microchipped.
It’s important to realize that microchips work when the lost pet is taken to a veterinarian’s office or shelter so the chip can be scanned. Its registration number is then located in the company’s database where the owner’s contact information is found. It’s very important to ensure your microchip registration information is accurate and up-to-date!
Contact your vet for more information about microchips and the companies used in your area, and don’t forget, microchipping is just one way to help keep your pet safe. Identification tags are a must!

Donate Blood and Save Lives
One of the ways we can help others in need is to donate blood. Healthy blood is needed not only to help treat victims of emergencies and disasters, but for the thousands of people in need of blood on a daily basis.
Giving blood is easy. First, determine if you’re eligible to donate. The American Red Cross lists their eligibility requirements here, and the Miller-Keystone Blood Center posts their eligibility criteria here.
Next, find a blood donation center in your area. The Miller-Keystone Blood Center serves Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Lehigh, Luzerne, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia and Schuylkill counties in Pennsylvania, and Hunterdon and Warren counties in New Jersey. Click here to find directions to their locations. This Community Blood Drive locator will help you find blood drives in your local area.
The American Red Cross website allows you to search for donation centers and blood drives near you. Click here to make an appointment to donate today!

Offering Support After Disaster Strikes
Our hearts go out to the many victims of the destruction caused by the recent tornadoes in Oklahoma. When disaster strikes, it’s imperative that we come together to support those in need. Please consider contributing to the relief efforts in any way possible. Read the American Red Cross’s official statement regarding the Oklahoma disaster to learn more about how to do so.
We also can’t forget the lives of our pets and animals in times such as this. Many reports are being shared regarding the loss of animal life and rescue efforts. Please visit the Moore Oklahoma Tornado Lost and Found Animals Facebook page and read this article to learn more about animals in need due to this disaster.
It’s also important to remember that we can take measures to be as prepared as possible before disaster strikes, in particular by planning for the care of our pets in emergencies. The ASPCA offers steps to take to prepare your home and pets for safety in the event of a disaster. You can order a free emergency pet alert sticker from their website to help alert first responders that pets live in your home and may need assistance. The Humane Society of the United States suggests creating a disaster plan for pets and lists steps to do so on their website. They also list items to include in pet emergency kits.
We at the Brave Tide Foundation are keeping the Oklahoma tornado victims, first responders, and volunteers in our thoughts and prayers.

Greyhounds in Gettysburg
The Greyhounds in Gettysburg gathering was a wonderful event filled with fun activities, shopping, and informative presentations. The Brave Tide ambassadors visited the outdoor off-leash play area, checked in on friends at the doggy daycare tent, and listened to a moving presentation about the plight of the Spanish Galgos. An event of this scale takes a lot of hard work and planning so many thanks to Nittany Greyhounds for creating a first class event. We are already looking forward to next year’s event! Check out the Nittany Greyhound Facebook page for more great photos from the event.
$30K Fundraising Challenge
March and April are shaping up to be very busy months for the Brave Tide Foundation. We are preparing for both scheduled and emergency animal transports and need help to fulfill our mission. At a recent board meeting the foundation’s leadership discussed ways to spread the word about Brave Tide.
To reach as many people as possible and kickoff the spring flight operations, the board is pledging $1 per Facebook page ‘like’ in the months of March and April up to $10,000. Liking and sharing the Brave Tide Facebook page is an easy way to help animals in need and a great way to increase awareness about the foundation. The board has also secured a corporate donor that will match every dollar donated in March and April up to $10,000. Every dollar donated in March and April is actually $2 with the corporate match pledge! Donations can be made online or sent to our mailing address at PO Box 735, Boyertown, PA 19512.
That means in just 2 months, the foundation can raise $10,000 from Facebook page likes, $10,000 from donations, and $10,000 from the corporate match pledge for a two month total of $30,000. With your help, the Brave Tide Foundation can raise the necessary funds to continue saving lives, one flight at a time!
The Brave Tide Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit, tax exempt, publicly supported organization under section 501(c)(3) of the IRS code, and is incorporated and registered in Pennsylvania. All donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law.
Greyhounds in Gettysburg
